DigiWells Annual Seminar was organized for the fourth time. With focus on digitalization, automation and autonomous well construction, presentations were given both by the industry and the researchers in DigiWells. Around 70 participants gained an insight into DigiWell’s work for well construction – from the planning phase to execution in an automated and digitized way. On how our activities on automated well planning, geosteering, development of new sensors, interoperability and drilling phase, fit nicely together. The extensive modelling development along with the use of AI techniques, all in a new software framework using microservices, impressed the audience.

An interesting and interactive panel debate about “Critical factors for further implementation of digitalization and automation within drilling and well”, engaged both the panel and the audience. Some highlights from the discussions:

– As an industry we do not have a unified approach to digitalization. We get individual improvements, but at the same time we get additional work processes to implement the improvements. We have building blocks, but we lack the seamless integration and interoperability, said Praveen Jain, leader of drill and well technology at Equinor, participating in our panel debate.

– It is hard to agree on a standard – to make a blueprint – when we deploy new technology with so many different vendors working side by side, agreed Oddbjørn Kvammen, Well Construction Advisor Digital Domain at Halliburton.

Odfjell drilling pointed out another essential factor. – The uptake in the organization is also crucial. If you can involve the organization and give them ownership to the technology, it is a lot easier to be successful, said Andre Bådsvik, Project Manager of Digital Operations at Odfjell Drilling.

– By the end of DigiWells in four years’ time we will have figured it all out, finished Tron Golder Kristiansen, board chair of DigiWells and Chief Engineer Drilling and Wells, Aker BP.

The audience was asked three questions, and with a good response it was nice to see that interoperability and automation scored highly .
