Flowrate out sensor towards higher TRL

Bringing the flowrate out sensor from a verified small-scale sensor to a full-scale and operationally validated prototype handling realistic flowrates

The Flow Rate Out Sensor is a patented drilling technology that combines highly accurate flow measurement with real-time monitoring of drill cuttings and gas content in a single compact device. Based on a novel rotating-wheel Coriolis measurement principle, the sensor delivers approximately 1% accuracy across a wide range of flow conditions, significantly outperforming conventional flow paddle systems.

Successfully verified through small-scale testing, the technology has demonstrated its ability to provide reliable flow measurements while enabling additional insights into cuttings transport and gas composition. A full-scale prototype is now being developed for testing in a realistic drilling environment at Ullrigg.

Designed for permanent installation on drilling rigs, the Flow Rate Out Sensor supports earlier detection of kicks and fluid losses, improves drilling automation, enhances operational safety, and reduces costs and environmental impact. By combining superior accuracy, a compact footprint, and multiple measurement capabilities, the technology has the potential to become a new industry standard for drilling operations in oil and gas, geothermal energy, and CO₂ storage.
